Abstract
The first direct observation of gravitational waves, predicted by Einstein in 1916, was made by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (Advanced LIGO) on September 14, 2015. The detection of the signature of merging black holes 1.3 billion light years away is a ground-breaking achievement that marks the beginning of a new era of gravitational wave astronomy. In this special seminar, I will recap the highlights of the discovery and answer questions about the origin, significance, and implications of this detection.
