Abstract
On Tuesday last week, Thouless, Haldane, and Kosterlitz were awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics "for theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter." In this talk I will briefly cover the work of these pioneers which has arguably revolutionized the field of condensed matter physics, or at the least greatly extended it. Aspects of topology used to describe collections of many particles is a relatively new and unprecedented approach, one that is still under development and vastly studied around the world.
