Abstract

The non-synthetic membrane is a heterogeneous mixture of different types of lipids, sugars, cholesterol, and membrane proteins. Typically membrane proteins are removed from this membrane and put into a synthetic one, or simply into detergent, in order to be studied without background noise. This may not account for the heterogeneous nature of the native membrane. The paper In Situ Structural Studies of Anabaena Sensory Rhodopsin in the E. coli Membrane by Ward et al [2015] describes a procedure where the membrane protein Anabaena Sensory Rhodopsin (ASR) is studied structurally using magic angle SSNMR and FTIR, while still being in the native membrane. My presentation will explain the steps in this procedure and the results of the experiment in this paper.
