The Guelph Physics live stream series returns Monday January 23rd at 7:00 pm EST with our 3rd annual co-stream with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada Montreal Centre.
The topic? Guelph on Mars!
Our guest is Salvador Fernandez, a Master’s student in the Guelph Mars Group headed by Dr. Ralf Gellert. Sal works with data from the Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry, or PIXL, on the Perseverance Rover. PIXL has a tool called an X-ray spectrometer that can identify chemical elements at a tiny scale as well as a camera system that can take close up images of a sample's micro-structures and texture. Using Iron/Manganese ratios, along with additional data, Sal hopes to identify regions of interest among soil samples analyzed by the Perseverance Rover - i.e. dust accumulates, sites of oxidative alterations, candidate samples for aqueous alteration.
We will also be joined by Guelph alumni and the Public Events Co-ordinator of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada Montreal Centre, Karim Jaffer. Karim will be on hand to discuss the role of the RASC and upcoming astro-events in the 2023.
As always, we will have a live Q&A where we will endeavour to answer your questions in real time! Please join us for this unique opportunity to chat about current research being conducted on the Planet of Robots! This livestream is aimed at a public audience so don’t worry if you don’t have a background in physics or astronomy, this will be the stream for you!
Join us live on the Guelph Physics YouTube or Facebook pages, or the RASC Montreal Centre YouTube channel!
